It is supposed that about five thousand years ago in the 28th year of Dwapara Yuga, Lord Sri Krishna was born to Vasudeva and Devaki in Mathura at midnight of the Ashtami tithi in Krishna paksha of Shravan month as per Hindu calendar (August-September). He was brought by Vasudeva to the house of Nand baba and Yashoda at Vrindavan to defend him from his uncle, the evil king Kansa. Lord Krishna is believed to be the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Traditional belief based on scriptural details and astrological calculations gives the date of Krishna's birth, known as Janmashtami. Krishna belonged to the royal family of Mathura, and was the eighth son born to the princess Devaki, and her husband Vasudeva.
